Amadeus and SITA tout progress in improved airport experience

Technology companies are increasingly setting their sights on improving the airport experience. Amadeus and Off Airport Check-In Solutions are taking the check-in experience entirely off the airport, enabling travelers to check-in and drop off their bags just about anywhere.

Powered by Amadeus’ Airport Common Use Service (ACUS) cloud technology, OACIS can quickly provide an off-airport, mobile check-in service that can be set up at any location a cruise terminal, hotel, train station or a major conference or event. All that is required is a laptop and internet connectivity.

OACIS checks-in the travelers and their luggage, securely transports their bags to the airport and delivers them directly into the airport baggage system.

The service, which Amadeus calls the world’s first “pop up” check-in service, allows travelers to spend the day sightseeing, attending meetings or any other activity without being encumbered by luggage.

Virgin Australia, the first airline to adopt the service, piloted it in Sydney for cruise ship and ocean liner passengers.

In another move toward a speedier airport experience, SITA declared JetBlue’s test of its biometric exit checks at boarding gates a success.

SITA will continue to work with JetBlue and U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the program.

SITA said the test, which started in June on flights from Boston Logan International Airport, is popular with JetBlue customers. When given the option, the vast majority choose to board by stepping up to a camera without having to show a boarding pass, passport or any other papers.

The “seamless experience” is helped by the near-100% accuracy of SITA’s biometric scanning technology.
