Yatra survey shows strong demand for summer travel

Yatra has surveyed 5,000 Indian travellers about their summer holiday plans and found that more of them prefer booking on desktop than mobile.

The established wisdom is that India is an increasingly mobile-first travel market. While standalone hotel bookings and point-to-point air are common mobile purchases, for the higher ticket holidays desktop is dominant.

Just over 40% said they preferred booking on mobile compared with just under 60% preferring desktop.

Elsewhere, the survey also found that a significant  minority of Indian travellers – 21% –  who prefer to book through traditional travel agents rather than online agents, although the distinction between a traditional agent with an online presence, and an online agent with an offline presence – such as Yatra – is not clear.

This is good news for technology suppliers to the Indian travel agency community while at the same time suggesting that online is more dominant in India than many other markets.

Also of note is the fact that more than 50% of Indians refer to online reviews before booking a holiday.

And with 90% of Indians planning to take a summer break compared with 83% when the survey was carried out last year, overall demand for travel is on the rise. Some  three in five of the sample take four or more vacations a year.
