Mobile app startups: Jambo, Fllike, flightspeak

This is a regular roundup of some of the latest mobile app startup launches in travel covering everything from trip inspiration and planning to virtual assistants.

Jambo

What is it?

Jambo is a location-based app that connects business professionals with other professionals they might want to meet within and outside of their organisation. The service identifies common interests to help users to get to know each other in advance.

The app also offers Jambo Tribes, to connect groups of individuals with common interests, skill sets or those who work for the same company. Tribes can also be used share content, find people to connect with and as a source for travel tips.

Is there a problem you’re trying to solve?

Founder and CEO Laura Stembridge says:

“Travelling for business can be tiresome and lonely. Dinners for one, room service, you know the drill! Who you meet, if anyone, whilst on a business trip is often left up to chance. We all love those serendipitous moments when you bump into contacts old or new, but these occasions are far and few between.

More people are travelling for business than ever before. Millennials are fuelling this trend as they dominate the workforce. By 2025, 75% of the workforce will be millennials – that’s 150m unique Millennial business travellers taking multiple trips!

Travelling to and from the airport can be costly for companies, wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to meet interesting people either from within or outside of your organisation and share lifts? Flights are often delayed; time in transit and at airports unproductive.

Large hotels are not conducive to meeting new people or bumping into people you know. How do you know that the person sat next to you in the airport lounge or hotel restaurant doesn’t hold the key to your next big business opportunity, works for the same company, or could become a life-long friend?

As companies become bigger and the need for global mobility drives more business travel, companies need to do more to connect and engage their increasingly mobile workforce, whilst helping them to maintain productivity whilst on the road.”

Who’s behind it?

More recently, the company was one of two companies to take part in Marriott TestBED, the accelerator initiative from the hotel giant.

Fllike

What is it?

Fllike is an app enabling travellers to score and share their flight experience. The service allows users to browse flights from other travellers to see the highest rated flights and airlines. Travellers can also share their experience and scores via social media.

Is there a problem are you trying to solve?

Founder Chris Holmes says:

“We’re offering a solution and an innovative travel platform. Fllike is the most beautiful way to score and share your flight experience.

We’re creating a product that makes it simple to answer the question – how was your flight? Enabling you to track your travels and share your experience scores with family and friends through social media.

We not only looking to improve the airline industry and add transparency in our own way, but create a product that’s cool and fun to use whilst you wait around in the airport.

Users can already browse flights by metrics such as price and time, but Fllike enables users to browse global flight scores, search flight legs and airlines by user experience – that is something truly unique.

In our view what better way to book a flight than seeing which of your Facebook friends flown the same leg, and how they scored their experience? Creating that is the journey we are on.”

Who’s behind it?

Anything else? Funding, accelerators, etc

The startup is currently talking to booking partners to provide links via the app as well as selected airlines to integrate their frequent flyer programs enabling users to gain points as they use Fllike.

The company can also offer insight to airalines on what’s working well on their flights and where there’s room for improvement.

Flightspeak

What is it?

FlightSpeak is a mobile app aimed at enhancing the airport experience by helping travellers find what’s relevant to them.

Is there a problem your trying to solve?

flightspeak founder and CEO Leo Osahor says:

“For travelers – flightSpeak helps solve the problem of inadequate, inconsistent and irrelevant information at airports.
Airports are stressful places for two reasons – a lack of reliable information that is relevant and personalized to travelers, and an absence of human connections to other travelers, either through shared advice and insights, or through common interests and destinations. No traveler wants to download multiple airport apps. With flightSpeak, travelers have one place to find relevant and reliable airport information for multiple airports as they travel the world.
For airports, flightSpeak helps solve the problem of decreasing non-aeronautical revenue and rising infrastructure/IT costs.

Airports are seeking to diversify their revenue streams from the bulk of their sources: airline revenue and parking (most airports). With the advent of cheaper travel and the promise of self-driving vehicles, airports are realizing the urgent need to innovate to grow revenue, diversify their income, retain share, and grow jobs and local economies.

A large majority of airports around the world have not kept up with the pace of mobile innovation, and are being left behind when mobile-powered travelers don’t spend as much at airports (or bypass them entirely!) due to poor experiences brought on by bad information and inadequate infrastructure.”

Who’s behind it?

Leo Osahor is the founder and CEO. He previously worked at Microsoft.

Anything else? Accelerators, funding etc.?

flightSpeak has raised an undisclosed amount of money from investors.
