Airbnb yet to be hit with Brits but growing impact on industry

The British haven’t quite got the Airbnb bug yet according to research released today.

A study on usage shows only 12% of travellers say they have used the peer-to-peer accommodation platform.

The World Travel Market Industry report reveals that while Airbnb has attracted huge investment and is estimated to be worth some $30 billion, it isn’t really on the radar for Brits.

The study shows that less than one in five, who have not used the service, are considering it for the future and, three-in-10 say they have no intention of trying it.

In addition, of the 12% who have tried Airbnb, 60% said they would use it again.

The research also gauges opinions of the wider industry with 47% saying the platform is not impacting their business.

Of those who say it is having an impact, 32% say it is negative and a fifth say it is positive.

However, influence is growing with similar research carried out in 2015 showing 58% of industry respondents saying they were unaffected.

And of those who were seeing an impact, 16% said it was positive versus the 26% who were feeling a negative impact.

The industry figures might raise eyebrows given how much time is devoted to debating how disruptive Airbnb is seen by the hotel industry.

During one panel at WTM yesterday, Airbnb and Uber were described as the only disruptive companies because they had challenged the status quo.

One panellist, Toposophy managing director Manolis Psarros, questioned whether they should be regulated or an open legal environment should be created.
