Large increase in business travellers found using Airbnb

The number of organisations using room and home-sharing service Airbnb has increased by a third – and the amount being spent is even higher.
Research by Concur, looking at company travel expenses filed through its system, found that the 32% jump in businesses opting for Airbnb coincided with a 42% jump in the overall outlay on stays between the second quarter of 2015 and the same period this year.
The dataset came from companies spending around $77 million on 320,000 incidences over the course of two years.
The majority of spending comes from small and medium-sized companies, with the average amount spent on an Airbnb stay coming in at around $2,800 a quarter.
This is not to say that hotels are suffering massively as a result – Concur found that major hotels chains are also experiencing growth, just at a slower rate, although total business travel is still 250 times greater than that on Airbnb.
Tech companies are seen as the main users of Airbnb for business travel accommodation, but other sectors such as academia are also early adopters.
Concur found that six of the top 20 spenders on Airbnb were universities, with eight from tech companies.
UK enterprise managing director for Concur, Chris Baker, says Airbnb usage is growing across all segments and industries.
“While hotel spend still accounts for the majority of business lodging spend, there’s an increase in business travellers exploring alternative lodging, especially during major conferences and events.”
San Francisco and London are the two most popular cities for Airbnb usage, according to the Concur data, although major events such as SXSW in Austin, Texas, can often push a city higher in the global rankings.
